BYD Accelerates the Next Era of EVs with Supercharged Innovation

The future of pure electric mobility is moving at full speed—thanks to BYD. What are the limits of charging speed? Can EVs achieve "fuel-like refueling speeds"? Is the goal of a 5-minute charge for 100 km of range attainable? BYD answered all these long-standing questions at its latest press conference.

On March 17, BYD unveiled its groundbreaking Super e-Platform at a major technology launch event, which also marked the pre-sale of its Han L and Tang L models. Lei Technology’s EV News was invited to attend, bringing firsthand insights into BYD’s latest innovations.

2 km per Second: BYD's Super e-Platform Redefines Charging

At the event, BYD introduced the Super e-Platform, a revolutionary advancement integrating flash-charging batteries, 30,000-rpm motors, and next-generation automotive-grade silicon carbide power chips. This full-scale upgrade in the three key electric powertrain components sets multiple global records and pushes electrification to new heights.

Leading the discussion was BYD’s breakthrough in charging speed. The company unveiled its latest 1-megawatt (1,000 kW) charging technology, delivering a record-breaking peak charging speed of 2 km per second—making it the fastest mass-production charging system in the world. This allows for an astonishing 400 km of range in just 5 minutes.

At the event, BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu made a bold statement:

“To eliminate charging anxiety once and for all, our goal is to make EV charging as fast as refueling a gasoline car—achieving true ‘fuel-like charging speeds.’”

This is not just a vision. BYD plans to build over 4,000 megawatt-level ultra-fast charging stations across China. Beyond its own infrastructure, BYD’s proprietary “Dual-Gun Charging” technology allows regular fast chargers to be instantly upgraded to ultra-fast chargers, while its industry-first “Smart Boost Charging” technology ensures seamless compatibility with public charging networks.

As the first models to feature the Super e-Platform, the Han L and Tang L are now available for pre-sale:

  • Han L EV: ¥270,000 – ¥350,000
  • Tang L EV: ¥280,000 – ¥360,000

Breaking the Last Stronghold of Gasoline Cars: The Era of “Fuel-Like Charging”

From last year's "EVs at the price of gasoline cars" to this year’s "EVs charging as fast as refueling", BYD has strategically dismantled the final advantages of traditional fuel-powered vehicles.

For the past decade, while EVs have dominated in intelligence and running costs, refueling speed remained the last stronghold of gasoline cars. Now, BYD’s “fuel-like charging” declaration forces traditional automakers to face an undeniable reality—EVs now surpass gasoline cars in environmental benefits, cost savings, intelligence, and refueling speed.

This is no longer a question of "if traditional automakers should adapt", but rather "whether they can keep up".

When charging becomes faster than refueling, when performance outshines combustion engines, and when prices undercut competitors—the era of gasoline cars may end sooner than expected.

What’s even more concerning for the industry? BYD’s history suggests that this cutting-edge technology will soon trickle down to its more affordable Qin and Song models. Once BYD rolls out megawatt charging across its entire lineup and completes its nationwide charging network, gasoline cars will face a true existential crisis.

BYD's Technological Moat: The “Megawatt Charging Standard”

With its megawatt ultra-fast charging, BYD is not just launching new products—it is setting the future standard for EV charging.

This technology requires simultaneous upgrades in the power grid, energy storage systems, and charging infrastructure. Unlike competitors, BYD’s vertically integrated supply chain gives it an insurmountable advantage. Automakers trying to follow suit must grapple with grid transformation costs, patent licensing barriers, and heavy infrastructure investments.

This puts legacy automakers and EV startups in a strategic dilemma:

  • Adopt megawatt charging? Massive R&D investment is required, and they may still be constrained by BYD’s patents.
  • Ignore megawatt charging? Their products will rapidly lose competitiveness.

In this "race to keep up or risk obsolescence", BYD is constructing an unbreachable technological moat.

BYD’s First-Mover Strategy: Securing Long-Term Market Leadership

Since 2023, BYD has leveraged its world-leading vertical integration to execute a dual-track strategy:

  1. Cost Leadership: Bringing down overall costs to maintain affordability.
  2. Annual Technological Surprises: Launching breakthrough innovations every year to maintain its edge.

This “first-mover strategy” ensures that BYD remains a step ahead of the competition.

In 2023, BYD’s "Champion Edition" strategy reshaped the market:

  • Lowering the entry price of PHEVs to ¥99,800.
  • Updating over 20 Dynasty & Ocean series models within six months.
  • Reducing the average price of key models by ¥20,000 – ¥30,000.

At the same time, BYD introduced DiPilot 100, its advanced assisted driving system. While it may only support highway NOA (Navigate on Autopilot) for now, the mass adoption of the system generates a massive data advantage.

The Super e-Platform launch further cements BYD’s "technology dominance" strategy. By 2025, the auto industry will face a turning point:

Those still relying on gasoline profits to fund EV transitions will realize that BYD has already erased the last technological gap.

Just as smartphones disrupted feature phones not through one single breakthrough, but through a series of interwoven innovations, BYD is reshaping the auto industry in the same way.

The Endgame: An Unstoppable BYD

With megawatt ultra-fast charging, BYD has set a new industry standard that others will struggle to match. It’s no longer a competition—it’s survival of the fittest.

The question now is not whether BYD will lead the EV revolution—but who, if anyone, can keep up.
